Key Function Interfacing for the MEDIEVAL Project Video-Enhancing Architecture

The FP7 M EDIEVAL project, which started in 2010, has been
defining the necessary evolutions over today’s mobile Internet architecture, in
order to more efficiently support the upcoming growth of video services, in
mobile wireless environments. This paper evolves from these initial definitions, by taking into consideration the requirements placed by a core set of next generation video services and defining a global architecture. We describe its main functionalities and subsystems as well as the necessary interfaces, towards the operation of these services in different use cases.

The MEDIEVAL project aims to leverage today’s Internet with thenecessary fabric to provide optimized video services in a mobile wireless world. It is expected that video traffic will surpass Peer-to-Peer (P2P) in volume in the coming years, and thus novel mechanisms and techniques need to be provided to better suit its unique requirements. This article describes the key functionalelements of the MEDIEVAL architecture, which provides a video-aware networking core coupled with abstracting interfaces which cater to service and access technology specific requirements, aiming to enable efficient video transport and novel video service development.
